Many of us have been fascinated by the strength of Spider webs as it has thought as the strongest natural material on the Earth. Spider silk has a tensile strength same as that of a high-grade steel alloy and strongest than most of the metals and alloys with only the density of one-sixths of the steel.
While now scientist has discovered a new 'strongest natural materials' which is the teeth of Limpet, a type marine animal.
Asa Barber, from the School of Engineering at Portsmouth University in the UK, said " Until now, we thought that spider silk was the strongest biological material because of its super-strength and potential applications in everything from bullet-proof vests to computer electronics. But now we have discovered that limpet teeth exhibit a strength that is potentially higher'.
While examining teeth of the Limpet to the atomic structure, the team found a super-hard, iron-bearing hydroxide mineral called goethite in the tooth structures. Researchers are trying to copy the structure and synthetically manufacture it to be used in cars, planes etc. It will used in engineering applications like Formula One car etc.
